A compounded medication is a custom-made prescription cream created by a pharmacist to meet your specific needs. Unlike mass-produced skincare, we can combine multiple active ingredients into one formula and adjust the concentrations (strengths) to be more potent or more gentle, depending on your skin’s unique requirements.
Because these formulas contain high-potency, pharmaceutical-grade ingredients (such as Tretinoin, Hydroquinone, or antibiotics), they are classified as prescription-only medications. A medical review is legally and clinically required to ensure the formula is safe for your skin type and won't cause adverse reactions.
The process is simple:
Consultation: Book a skin assessment at Western Skin Institute (in-person or via telehealth).
Evaluation: Our practitioners will diagnose your skin concern and determine the best formula for you.
Scripting: Once approved, your prescription is sent to our compounding pharmacy partner to be prepared.
Usually, yes—but some adjustments may be needed. Because these treatments are very active, we often recommend "buffering" them with a quality moisturiser or temporarily pausing other exfoliants (like AHAs or BHAs). Your practitioner will provide a personalised routine guide during your consultation.
Yes. Because they are freshly mixed and often contain fewer preservatives than mass market products, compounded medications have a shorter shelf life (typically 3 to 6 months). Each bottle will be clearly labelled with an "unopened" and "once opened" expiry date to ensure you are using the ingredients at their most stable and effective.
